February Reflections

It feels like the year is just getting started here in Singapore. January was a funny month of starting then stopping for Lunar New Year.

We are now out of the Lunar New Year 15 days of celebrations, kind of like the 12 days of Christmas and feels like momentum is building again this week.

I have lots of face to face events in the diary this month and in early March which I’m really looking forward to. It’s still a joy and a novelty to be back face to face with people!

In this months blog posts I’m talking about Leadership Loneliness and How asking for feedback builds psychological safety with your team.

Please do let me know what you think and if the post resonates and you want a virtual coffee please do reach out and let’s chat.

Also I’ve pulled together a special February offer for The Leadership Circle 360 Profile and a 90 minute Coaching debrief to get feedback on your leadership and how you want to lead with more purpose and creative, strategic energy in 2023, more details below

Are you a transformational leader?

When was the last time you got some developmental feedback on your leadership?

One of the things I hear a lot of leaders craving is feedback. Am I doing OK? How could I be more impactful? Am I likeable? Am I making a difference? Am I in the right role, am I on the right path?

The more senior you become, the less people give you regular feedback because the power distance dynamic comes into play and it’s harder to give your boss feedback unless there is psychological safety in place.

Plus sometimes leaders don’t ask enough for feedback and only get it once a year or when they engage in a developmental programme. Actually asking your team and peers for feedback is one of the greatest ways to build connection and trust.

Last year I started working with The Leadership Circle, which is now my favourite leadership 360 and developmental coaching tool. I’m offering a special February ‘23 offer to run and debrief your Leadership Circle profile - spoiler alert, it’s both leadership and life changing 90 minutes if you want it to be!

Read below for more information on the profile and the offer (and I absolutely love this feedback above from one of my clients on his experience!)

Is it lonely as a leader?

When I’m work with individuals, leadership teams or on larger leadership programmes one of the things most people say at the end is …

Now I feel like I’m not so alone anymore

Just that very gift of time and space to connect with yourself and other humans builds the connection

The more senior you become, often the more isolated you can feel. There is also a weight of responsibility that is often felt beyond the function of the role. It can be lonely maintaining your own sense of personal success alongside helping all you lead be successful and delivering the results required of you.

Sometimes it just all feels too much.

According to one finding in the Harvard Business Review, for example, half of CEOs experience loneliness on the job, and most of them feel loneliness hinders their work performance. Studies have also shown that loneliness is linked to burnout among leaders and affects overall wellbeing.

Do we feel more or less alone at the moment having had some much time disconnected from each other during COVID and what is contributing to our loneliness epidemic?
